Jesse tells the story
with his brush.

While Jesse was recuperating from a very nasty back injury, he could not paint at his easel. But he wanted to keep working at his art. So he got out some of the ledger pages he had and came up with some images to put on them with his colored pencils. While his art is usually done in acrylic paint, the colored pencil is the more traditional art form.
Each series is based on  his explanation:“The longest of time ago, all creatures were brothers and sisters….all were people.  All could communicate with each other, work and play together, and were helpful to each other. I wanted to depict this old relationship. It’s characteristic of Cherokee stories to depict non-human creatures as huge….and I’ve shown that in these works.”

The Horse Balloon

This is one of the first series he did…American Indians in hot air balloons. He lethis fantasy take over with his “what if?” idea. If Indians could sew skins tightly enough to make waterproof canoes, why could they not create hot air balloons from skins? Thus, are his innovative “Indians Float the World” series depicting those of Woodland creatures as hot air balloons.

Tricia

This last series is, of course, dinosaurs….this is his version of theTriceratops.

The Poodle

This is one of the second series he developed….with humans and dogs. Each has an American Indian riding on a favorite breed of dog.  The legend behind this series is that dogs were living apart from humans and were often in the wild dark and cold. One day the mother of the dog clan came to the humans and said that they were tired of this life and wanted to come live with the humans. In exchange the dogs promised to love and protect the humans forever. So when you think you’ve picked your dog companion, the dog really picked you.
